Small parts. Big job. A filter or cartridge only does its job when it matches both the hazard and the respirator.

Particulate filters are designed for airborne particles such as dusts, mists and fumes. Gas and vapor cartridges are selected for specific chemicals, while combination cartridges can provide both particulate and gas or vapor protection when approved for the application. Prefilters help protect the main filter but aren’t normally used as standalone respiratory protection.

Start with your respirator system. Filters and cartridges are designed for specific brands, models and product families. A 3M cartridge won’t fit a Moldex facepiece, and an RPB PX5 filter isn’t interchangeable with a Bullard EVA filter. Check the respirator model, part number, protection type and pack quantity before ordering.

Particulate filters should be replaced when they become damaged, soiled or difficult to breathe through, or as directed by the manufacturer. Gas and vapor cartridges need a planned change schedule based on the hazard and conditions of use—smell isn’t a reliable way to tell when a cartridge is exhausted.
