Beat the Heat: Recognizing & Preventing Heat Stress on the Job

As summer temperatures soar, so does the risk of heat stress—a potentially serious health hazard for anyone working outdoors or in high-heat environments. At Novarlo, we’re committed to helping you stay cool, safe, and compliant with top-rated flame-resistant (FR) and cooling workwear.

What Is Heat Stress?

Heat stress occurs when your body can’t cool itself down efficiently. This can lead to fatigue, dizziness, heat exhaustion, and in severe cases, heat stroke, which can be life-threatening. Workers in construction, utilities, oil & gas, electrical, and manufacturing are especially vulnerable.

Signs of Heat Stress to Watch For

Recognizing early symptoms is critical. Train yourself and your team to identify these signs:

Heat Exhaustion:

·         Heavy sweating

·         Dizziness or lightheadedness

·         Muscle cramps

·         Headache

·         Weakness

·         Nausea or vomiting

Heat Stroke (medical emergency):

·         Body temperature above 103°F

·         Confusion or slurred speech

·         Hot, dry skin (may stop sweating)

·         Loss of consciousness

·         Seizures

If someone exhibits symptoms of heat stroke, call emergency services immediately.

How to Prevent Heat Stress

Here’s how to stay safe and reduce your risk:

Hydration

·         Drink water every 15–20 minutes, even if you’re not thirsty.

·         Avoid caffeine and alcohol during the workday.

Take Breaks

·         Rest in shaded or air-conditioned spaces regularly.

·         Use a buddy system to monitor each other.

Acclimatize Gradually

·         Slowly increase workload for new or returning workers in hot environments.

 Dress for the Heat

·         Wear lightweight, breathable, flame-resistant clothing.

·         Use cooling vests or accessories that regulate body temperature.
