Welding and grinding can generate metal fumes and fine airborne particles, with exposure changing depending on the process, base metal, coatings, ventilation and time on the job. The right respiratory protection depends on what is being welded and the conditions the welder is working in.

PAPR welding helmets combine respiratory protection with welding eye and face protection, making them a practical option for longer jobs where filtered airflow and integrated protection matter. Supplied-air respirators may be needed where the welding environment requires a separate source of breathable air.

For some welding and grinding tasks, a reusable half-mask respirator with suitable P100 filters or a disposable P100 respirator may be appropriate. Particulate filters do not protect against every gas or vapor that can be produced during welding, so the process, materials and coatings still need to be considered.

For occupational use in the US, choose NIOSH Approved respiratory protection and keep the system within the manufacturer’s approved configuration. Check that the headtop, blower or air supply, filters, breathing tubes and welding lens are compatible before ordering.
