Choosing a disposable respirator starts with the hazard—not simply the highest filtration rating.

N95 respirators are commonly selected for non-oil-based particles such as dusts, mists and fumes. P100 respirators provide a higher level of particulate filtration and strong resistance to oil, making them suitable for applications where that additional protection is required.

Fit and comfort matter too. Compare sizes, strap designs, face seals and valved options to find a respirator workers can wear correctly and consistently. An exhalation valve can make a respirator cooler and easier to breathe through, although valved models may not suit workplaces with source-control requirements.

Every tight-fitting disposable respirator should be fit-tested for the person wearing it, with a seal check performed before each use. These products protect against specified particles; they do not protect against gases or vapours and do not supply oxygen. Always select and use respiratory protection as part of your workplace respiratory-protection program.
