As the American Ladder Institute (ALI) kicks off #LadderSafetyMonth we thought this was a good opportunity to take a look at the importance of ladder safety and share this reminder on the OSHA regulations change last quarter.

Ladder Safety Matters

Ignoring regulation compliance/fines or the cost of purchasing and maintaining proper fall arrest systems. Let's look at how falls affects the workforce:

1. There are more than 700 ladder related injuries every day (ALI)
2. Nearly a quarter of construction fall deaths happen from ladders (CPWR)
3. More than 2 worker deaths caused by falls on average each week (ALI)
4. Nearly 40% of construction fall deaths happen from a height of 15 ft. or less (CPWR)

OSHA Regulations for Fixed Ladders Before & After 11/19/2019

OSHA's expectations recently changed for fixed ladders that extend more than 24 feet above a lower level. The rules require that employers assure the following:

1. Pre-November 19, 2018 - fixed ladder systems installed prior to this date must be equipped with a personal fall arrest system, ladder safety system, cage, or well
2. New fixed ladder systems installed after November 19, 2018 must be equipped with a personal fall arrest system or a ladder safety system - a cage or well solution is no longer compliant
3. Fixing or replacing ladders, cages, or wells since 11/19/18 now requires installation of a personal fall arrest system or ladder safety system for the section that has been fixed or replaced
